WhatsApp Web to Get a Fingerprint Security Feature
Since its launch in 2009, WhatsApp has become the primary messaging app for its 1.5 billion active users worldwide. A decade ago, when it was launched, there were no Instagram-like stories, video calls, dark mode features which the messenger has added over the years. WhatsApp has consistently looked to improve and innovate to serve its users with the best messaging app in the world, and they have been quite successful at that. Most messengers will struggle to compete with the reach and popularity that it has garnered in a decade.

Its philosophy of constant innovation also gave us the WhatsApp web, which can be used from any device with an internet connection. All one needs to do is go to web.whatsapp.com and scan the QR code to pair with the smartphone. WhatsApp Web offers a lot of flexibility for its users who can use the app from their laptops or tablets without having to reach for their phone. It was launched in 2015 and has become an immensely useful resource. Recently it was reported that the company is working on getting fingerprint security for the WhatsApp web as well, which has been available for the app since 2019.
It seems like Facebook-owned messaging service is trying to make WhatsApp Web more secure. The fingerprint authentication will act as an extra layer of protection. The users will have to use their phones to scan their fingerprints to initiate the session of WhatsApp web. As of now, all one has to do is scan their QR code in the browser to start a new session. One can also opt to tick the “Keep Me Signed In” Box to ensure one can resume sessions later without having to scan the QR code again.
It is not known whether scanning the QR code will be required once the fingerprint option is available to resume a session or to login. But it is going to bring an extra layer of security for the users from cyber-criminals and hackers who might try to access the chats with malicious intent. It isn’t the only feature that the company might roll out in the future since they are also working on multiple device support and mute chats forever.
It seems that after all these years, WhatsApp continues to stand by its belief of consistent innovation to create better service for its users. There is no doubt that the company is going to add another billion users in the next few years with the democratization of the internet. No company seems to be a threat for WhatsApp as of now as it continues to rule mobile messaging.
